Bare Root Trees, Shrubs & Plants

What is bare root? Bare root is a cheaper and lighter alternative for plants, trees, and shrubs. McKay is the largest supplier in the Midwest for bare root plants and we've been doing this for over a century. It's a great choice if you're looking to buy something large, but you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. They arrive to your home without any leaves or buds (dormant) and establish a strong root system over winter or spring (depending on your planting season). They are significantly cheaper due to their bare root being exposed and being in a dormant state upon arrival, but they're just as high quality as anything else. Bare root is kind of the ugly duckling in the nursery world. At first it looks bare, but give it some time and it will transform into a robust and stunning piece of nursery stock. Typically we dig bare root in the 2nd and 3rd week in September. Please note that some species do not do well with fall planting and prefer to be planting in spring.
