Red maples, Acer rubrum, are by far the most classic when it comes to their beautiful and bright show of foliage in fall. Few sights warm the heart more than a Red maple in autumn, its canopy a blaze of color. The three to five loved leaves turn wine-red and have contrasting pale under-surfaces, which are eye-catching even when shed and lying on the ground. They have moderate growth and mature to 50 feet tall and 40 feet wide. They like full sun. Be sure to plant in zone 4.
