Sedum have fleshy, soft green leaves on stems that can reach 24 inches tall. Since the new growth appears at the base of older stems, dividing plants is easy. The large heads of flowers are a soft mauve-pink in the species, but there are cultivars with colors ranging form bright hot pinks to rosy red, and the brick red of "Autumn Joy". The plants flower from late summer into the fall. This is an easy-care plant that accepts a wide range of conditions. Sedum prefers full sun, but tolerates some light shade for part of the day. While it can grow in a sandy, well-drained soil, it will tolerate a heavier soil, which gives it an advantage over other sedums. Hardy to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
