Small or rushy leaved and wiry stemmed, this accommodating deciduous family, embraces showy, small or large bushes. All pea-like flowers in various shades of yellow. Hardy and tolerating exposed positions, all genistas perform best in full sun. Drought resisting, they are ideal for hot spots that cannot be easily watered. Happiest in humus-rich and light, free-draining sand and loam, they also prosper in clay if you work in gravel and crumbly organic materials to improve drainage. Genista tinctoria, specifically, excels in chalky soil. Plant March-April ad June-November. Flowers from May-August and needs to be pruned in April.
