Heartening indeed is the spring sight of a bush thickly laden with starry, sulfur-yellow, or deep golden blooms. There are two principal kinds: border forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia), which makes a rounded shrub to 8 ft high and across, and forsythia suspensa, a snaking, weeping, or trailing form, enchanting when cascading over a wall or over the lower branches of pink, weeping cherry. Border forsythia can be also grown as a flowering hedge or trained to frame a window or doorway. A sunny position is vital. In shade a multitude of shoots form but many will refuse to flower. Growth also becomes loose and weak. Forsythia braves cold wind. These plants grow strongly in most well-drained soils, from heavy clay to light sand and chalk.
