Pruning HydrangeasSpring is a great time for pruning your hydrangeas before the new growth comes in. Pruning is a great way to maintain the health of your plants. There are 3 types of hydrangeas: Arborescens, Macrophylla and Paniculata. Check out this how-to video on pruning hydrangeas.

1. Arborescens - When pruning this variety it is best to trim down to ground level. Arborescens include:Annabelle Hydrangea

  • Annabelle Hydrangea
  • Ryan Gainey Hydrangea
  • Samantha Hydrangea
  • Snowhill Hydrangea
  • Invicibelle Spirit Hydrangea.

2. Macrophylla - It is best to cut back the winter damage and cut back the stems to live buds. Macrophylla variety includes:Endless Summer

  • All Summer Beauty Hydrangea
  • Endless Summer Hydrangea
  • Grateful Red™ Hydrangea
  • Mousmee Hydrangea
  • Nantucket Blue Hydrangea

3. Paniculata - Prune back 1/3 of the shrub into the body of the plant. Do not just trim off the top. Trim off cross-over or duplicating branches. Paniculata variety includes:Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea
