Mulching is a good option to control those persistent weeds in your yard as well as to freshen up your landscape beds. The fresh layer of mulch really enhances all the great colors of the flowering plants.
The summer months are a great time to add new mulch (double shredded hardwood mulch is a great organic mulch to use). The mulch keeps the moisture in and the weed pressure down. Make sure to pull or cut weeds down before adding mulch. Aim for about 2-3" of mulch and no more. Do not pile mulch up around the trunks of trees or stems of the plants. Leave a few inches for the tree or plant to breathe. This will also help prevent any depletion of moisture for the plant to keep it alive and healthy. Renew the mulch every few years as the mulch breaks down and spreads thin.
