Wondering what's trending in the landscaping world for 2014? Adding outdoor rooms for entertaining and recreational purposes continues to increase in popularity among American homeowners. A recent survey conducted by the American Society of American Architects reveals the most sought after design elements homeowners want integrated into their outdoor living spaces. The top three rated categories are Gardens and Landscaped Spaces, Outdoor Living Spaces (defined as kitchens and entertainment spaces) and Outdoor Recreation (pools, spas, tennis courts).
Expanding living space to the outdoors is a very economical way to increase living space without renovating the home’s interior. Outdoor living space has truly become an extension of the home’s living space. A well-designed outdoor living space is great for entertaining or spending time with family and friends. And for others, it is an escape after a long day of work to enjoy the great outdoors.
Among the more popular outdoor living features are:
- Seating/Dining Areas
- Fire Pits/Fireplaces
- Installed seating (benches, seatwalls, ledges, steps, boulders)
The top rated Landscape/Garden Elements:
- Low Maintenance Landscapes
- Native Plants
- Fountains/Ornamental Water Features
- Food/Vegetable Gardens (including orchards/vineyards etc.)
- Xeriscaping or Dry Gardens
Incorporating edible plants with traditional landscaping, called ediscapes, are becoming more and more in demand. Click here for the full survey results.
