Arthur J. Simmonds

The Arthur J. Simmonds Caryopteris is a low, compact shrub with silvery foliage and lavender blooms from July to frost. This plant does best if it's treated as a perennial plant for its care and maintenance. Be sure to cut back to 6-8" above the ground each spring for best growth and results. Plant matures to be around 2-3' tall and wide.

Alleman's Compact Dogwood

The Alleman's Compact Dogwood is a more compact variety of red twigged Dogwood. This fine selection will only grow to be around 5' tall x 5' wide. This shrub has multi-season interest with white spring flowers, white fall fruit and vibrant red stems in the winter. Dogwood plants will tolerate and even prefer excess moisture so don't let them dry out. By removing 25% of the oldest stems annually it will keep the plant producing fresh, beautiful red canes for your winter garden.

The Pink Beauty Potentilla is a nice clear, pink flowering selection that holds its color well. It has a rounded form and bright green foliage. Make sure to remove older stems to the ground in early spring. This plant matures to be around 2-3' tall and wide. This versatile shrub works best in the landscape if planted in borders, along walks, as low hedges or as a mass or foundation planting.

The Blue Star is a unique, slow growing Juniper with bright steel blue foliage. The needles are arranged in a "Star-like" pattern at the tips of the branches. This evergreen shrub prefers a well-drained location in full sun to partial shade. Blue Star will get about 18-24" tall and after many years will spread to about 3'. It's a great color accent for any landscape.

Pagoda Dogwood

The Pagoda Dogwood is a native large shrub or small tree with horizontally spreading branches in irregular tiers. Flowers are white to pale yellow in late spring, followed by bluish fruits in late summer. This dogwood has a beautiful red-purple fall color that will add interest to your landscape. It makes for a distinctive specimen or accent plant. This plant prefers a sheltered location with cooler, moist soil. At its maturity it will grow to get around 15-20' high and wide.

The Lollipop Crabapple is an excellent, compact growing Crabapple that resembles a lollipop. A prolific bloomer, covered with white flowers in spring, and miniature golden-amber fruit in fall. It's disease resistant, a striking small ornamental tree that works excellent as a specimen or for accenting in the landscape, framing entrance ways, or enhancing walkways. Useful in small areas eventually attaining a height and spread around 8-10'.

The Green Velvet Boxwood is an excellent, broad-leaf evergreen shrub. It is a rather slow-growing boxwood, with a low-rounded form, but it retains its good green color all winter long. This plant works great for hedges or foundation planting in protected sites. This is by far the best plant available for low hedges. Autumn Joy Sedum

The Autumn Joy sedum has large, plate-like flower heads that are very attractive to butterflies. They're borne on 18-24 inch sturdy stems that bloom starting around September as light pink, passing through salmon and finally attaining a glowing rosy russet shade. Be sure to leave these uncut all winter to capture and sculpt fallen snow, or cut them for attractive indoor decorations. It's excellent in a small group or you can use them in a mass planting in the landscape. Be sure to plant in full sun, about 15-18 inches apart in virtually any garden soil, including wet areas. This hardy plant is tolerant of a wide range of conditions from rock gardens to perennial borders. This is an xeriscape plant. Hardiness zone 3.

Deamii Black-Eyed Susan

The Deamii Black-eyed Susan is a subspecies that flowers a bit later than the Goldstrum. It's a great plant for a sunny border or meadow planting in the landscape. It's a bit less formal, but still great for cutting. The best news is it is not as susceptible to septonia (black leaf spot that affects 'Goldstrum'). The flowers are a bit smaller, but they are more orange and with a flatter cone. Mature size is around 30" tall and wide. Hardiness zone 4.

Eastern Redbud

The Eastern Redbud tree is a rare find! This is a very attractive large shrub or can act as a small tree. The branches are covered with masses of small, florescent lavender flowers around early spring (April) before the leaves appear. The leaves are heart shaped and dark green. This tree is sited best away from prevailing winds. It was grown from McKay's own seed source originally from the oldest trees in Columbus, Wisconsin. All or our plants are grown as multiple stem shrub form plants that can be left branched close to the ground, or can be limbed up to create a nice micro climate for shade loving perennials or other ground cover beneath. This tree can experience some die-back if planted north of the Madison, Wisconsin area. Hardiness zone 4. Mature size is around 12-20' tall x 15-18' wide.
