Grown primarily for their sweetly fragrant blooms, daphnes are best planted close to a living room where, on a warm day with a window open, scent will carry indoors. Alternatively, set bushes in pots or tubs beside a garden seat. Daphne prospers in full sun or very light shade. Shelter it from strong, drying winds. It must have perfectly drained soil with a high organic content. Keep roots cool by mulching plants with well-decayed manure. Daphne at a glace, it's a deciduous or evergreen shrub with purple-red to pink flowers from later winter to early summer. Hardy to 19 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant March-April and July-November.
