| Evergreens During Fall - Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 11:19 |
| Fall not only means that Deciduous plants will loose there leaves, it also means that evergreens will loose older interior foliage as well. Arborvitae for instance, will drop their older interior foliage in September or October. It seems that newly planted Arborvitae will loose foliage sooner than established plants. The plants can look very thin once the older foliage has been shed, but as long as the outer foliage is still healthy, no need to worry. This year in our area, many Arborvitae have produced many seeds. These seeds will mature and turn brown leaving the capsules on the plants. The new growth in spring will emerge and cover the unsightly seed capsules. Pine trees for instance, will hold the newest needles and the interior, older needles will turn yellow and drop. It may look very dramatic to see so many needles turn yellow and then a windy day comes along one day, and they are dropping all around the base of these trees. If you have large Pines, you will find these needles covering everything. Spruce and Fir trees hold more needles, but they too will drop the older interior needles as well. Again this is a very normal shedding process. If you have any specific questions regarding your plant material from McKay Nursery Company, please feel free to contact us anytime.
